Our choice to craft products from natural materials is no coincidence. We were all raised in the outdoors, exploring the varied landscapes of the Cascades, Appalachians and Rocky Mountains as kids, sneaking home bits of jet-black obsidian, iron-tinged sand and cobalt-colored rocks whenever possible. The outdoors was, and still is, our favorite playground. So when the time came to find inspiration for what we were making, we had to look no further than our own backyard for our namesake: Crater Lake.
In composition and function, Crater Lake is an analogy for what we make at Mazama; in our eyes, it is nature’s ultimate vessel, formed from heat and rock in one cataclysmic event. But thousands of years ago, this national park looked much different. Standing substantially taller than it does today, the ancient volcano known to many as Mt. Mazama blew it’s top in incredible fashion, leaving the massive caldera we now know in its place. Crater Lake stands alone as one of the most unique geological formations -- and one of the most beautiful bodies of water -- within the United States. We pay homage to this natural wonder and its origin story with our name, Mazama Wares.
